Illinois state law (Public Act 097-0008) enacted on June 13, 2011, requires school board members who are elected after that date, to complete a minimum of four hours of professional development leadership training. This training must occur within the first year of their term of office and must be on the topics of education law, labor law, financial oversight and accountability, and fiduciary responsibilities. This act also requires school board members who participate in a vote on a tenured teacher dismissal based upon the Optional Alternative Evaluation Dismissal Process for PERA evaluations to complete training related to tenure acquisition, teacher evaluations, intervention requirements, reduction in force, and dismissal. Completion of this course qualifies a board member to be a PERA-trained board member. Online coursework may be taken through the IASB.
