STARK 100 FUNDRAISER SURVEY

THE STARK 100 BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE STARK 100 ATHLETIC BOOSTERS ARE CONSIDERING A FUNDRAISING DRIVE TO RAISE MONIES FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ATHLETIC FACILITIES. BEFORE WE PROCEED WITH PLANNING, WE WOULD LIKE TO GET SOME INPUT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS.  PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE SURVEY:

THE CURRENT PLAN IS TO FOCUS ON:

  1. REPLACING BLEACHERS AT THE FOOTBALL FIELD IN WYOMING
  2. REPLACING THE HS GYM FLOOR IN TOULON
  3. REPLACING THE SCOREBOARD AT THE FB FIELD IN WYOMING
  4. CONSTRUCTION OF A SMALL, BUILDING AT THE FB FIELD IN WYOMING

WHY THESE PROJECTS?

  1. THE EXISTING BLEACHERS AT THE FB FIELD ARE NOT ADA COMPLIANT AND BECAUSE OF CODE AND STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES, OUR ENGINEER HAS RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN “NOT ADA COMPLIANT”?

WE MEAN THAT OUR BLEACHERS DO NOT CURRENTLY MEET ‘AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT’ GUIDELINES FOR HANDICAP SEATING, AISLE WIDTH, RAMP ACCESSIBILITY, ETC.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CODE AND STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES?

  • EXISTING CONCRETE SUPPORT PIERS ARE CRACKED AND DETERIORATING
  • EACHBLEACHER NEEDS ADDITIONAL VERTICAL AISLES
  • THE VERTICAL AISLES NEED TO BE FULLY CLOSED
  • AISLE HAND RAILS AND NOSING STRIPS ARE REQUIRED
  • FRONT, SIDE, AND REAR GUARDRAILS ARE NEITHER OF PROPER HEIGHT NOR CLOSED AS REQUIRED BY CODE
  • EXISTING RAMPS ARE NOT WITHIN CODE REGARDING SLOPE AND GUARDRAILS

HOW OLD ARE THE EXISTING BLEACHERS?

ACCORDING TO CONTRACTORS THAT HAVE PERFORMED INSPECTIONS, THE MAIN HOME AND VISITOR BLEACHERS ARE 1950’S VINTAGE.

WHAT IS OUR CURRENT APPROXIMATE SEATING CAPACITY?

  1. MAIN HOME BLEACHERS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE FIELD: 454
  2. AUXILIARY BLEACHERS ON THE HOME SIDE: 160
  3. SOUTH END ZONE BLEACHERS: 150
  4. VISITOR BLEACHERS: 232

HOW MANY FANS ATTEND EACH VARSITY GAME?

BECAUSE MANY FANS PURCHASE OR RECEIVE PASSES (STUDENT, ADULT, FAMILY, SENIOR CITIZEN) AT THE START OF THE YEAR, IT IS DIFFICULT TO GAUGE AVERAGE GAME ATTENDANCE BASED SOLELY ON GAME-DAY GATE RECEIPTS.  HOWEVER, (IN ADDITION TO THE FOLKS THAT HAVE PASSES TO GAMES), OUR AVERAGE GAME-DAY TICKET SALES FOR REGULAR SEASON HOME, VARSITY GAMES OVER THE PAST 5-YEARS IS 713 (WITH A HIGH OF 1073).  OUR AVERAGE GAME-DAY TICKET SALES FOR HOME, PLAYOFF GAMES OVER THE PAST 5-YEARS IS 1281 (WITH A HIGH OF 1906).

DO YOU HAVE AN ESTIMATED COST FOR BLEACHER REPLACEMENT?

NOT INCLUDING THE COST OF OLD BLEACHER REMOVAL OR NEW CONCRETE PADS, THE BLEACHER INSTALLATION ESTIMATE EXCEEDS $100,000.

 

  1. THE GYM FLOOR IS ORIGINAL TO THE BUILDING AND WILL NOT ACCEPT ANOTHER SANDING. THE FLOOR IS CUPPED AND SPLINTERING AND MAY SOON BECOME UNSAFE FOR STUDENT USE.

HOW OLD IS THE SCHS GYM FLOOR?

WE CAN FIND NO RECORDS OF ANY NEW FLOOR GYM CONSTRUCTION AT SCHS SINCE 1959.

WHY CAN’T YOU JUST REPAIR THE AREAS THAT ARE DAMAGED OR CUPPED?

SOME DAMAGED AREAS OF THE FLOOR HAVE BEEN CUT OUT AND REPLACED.  SOME SPLINTERING AREAS HAVE BEEN FILLED IN WITH EPOXY.  THESE TEMPORARY FIXES HAVE HELPED EXTEND THE FLOOR LIFE. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS NO “QUICK FIX” TO THE FLOOR CUPPING ISSUE THAT HAS RESULTED IN AN UNEVEN AND IRREGULAR SURFACE.

DO YOU HAVE AN ESTIMATED COST FOR FLOOR REPLACEMENT?

OUR ARCHITECT HAS PROJECTED THAT THE REMOVAL OF THE EXISTING FLOOR, AND THE INSTALLATION AND PAINTING OF A NEW MAPLE HARDWOOD FLOOR WILL COST IN EXCESS OF $100,000.

  1. THE SCOREBOARD AT THE FB FIELD IS OLD, DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN, AND OFTEN OUT OF SERVICE.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T REPLACE THE SCOREBOARD?

WE CAN CONTINUE TO MAKE REPAIRS, BUT THE FACT IS THAT OUTDOOR SCOREBOARDS HAVE FINITE LIFE EXPECTANCIES, AND THE CURRENT SCOREBOARD IS NEARING THE END OF ITS LIFE.

DO YOU HAVE AN ESTIMATED COST FOR SCOREBOARD REPLACEMENT?

THE COST OF A NEW SCOREBOARD WILL DEPEND ON ITS SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY.

  1. WE ARE CURRENTLY UNABLE TO OFFER VISITING TEAMS ANY “COVERED” PLACE TO MEET PRIOR TO, DURING, OR AFTER GAMES. THE ADDITION OF A SMALL, MULTI-USE BUILDING ON SITE WILL RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

WHERE WOULD THIS BUILDING BE LOCATED? WOULD YOU HAVE ANY OTHER USES FOR THE BUILDING?

PROBABLY IN THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE FB FIELD PROPERTY, BUT NO FINAL DETERMINATION HAS BEEN MADE. THE BUILDING COULD ALSO BE USED TO STORE EQUIPMENT.

HOW LARGE DOES THE BUILDING NEED TO BE?

ONLY LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE A VISITING TEAM FOR PRE-GAME AND HALF-TIME MEETINGS.

DO YOU HAVE AN ESTIMATED COST FOR THE PROPOSED BUILDING?

NOT AT THIS TIME.

HOW MUCH OF THE TOTAL COST OF THESE PROJECTS DO YOU HOPE TO PAY FOR THROUGH THE FUNDRAISER?

AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BUT NO DETERMINATION HAS YET BEEN FINALIZED.
